When Sarah took me on the tour of HCM city I was surprised and impressed by her knowledge and professionalism. I must confess that I was a little late and did not have Sarah’s phone number but she waited for me nonetheless on a very hot and humid day. Starting with the Reunification Palace then to Notre Dame, The Central Post Office and the War Museum, Sarah knew all there was to know about these sites and really showed a keenness to tell the story of her country which she is obviously very proud. I traveled Vietnam for three months and can honestly say that this tour was the most informative. I wish Sarah all the best for the future and hope that she can enlighten many more tourists with her country’s history.

  2. Thank you so much Anthony. I wish you all the best too.

I had the most amazing and personalized free walking tour this morning! Bao, my tour guide picked me up at my hotel with his bike and rode very carefully to chinatown were we had an amazing breakfast with delicious Pho and then he showed me around chinatown, the Binh Tay market, two pagodas (sorry cant remember the names) and made me try a very refreshing typical juice from a street vendor. As i had already seen the touristic places in district 1 I just wanted to see the real Ho Chi Minh and Bao did an amazing job showing it to me. He was always making sure I was safe and that we were visiting places I was interested in. He was also very kind a generous telling me about his life ans giving me an insight of the vietnamese lifestyle. It was definately the highlight of my trip to Ho Chi Minh. Thank you Bao and all the Ho Chi Minh free tours team for such an amazing opportunity.

I only had one day and a half to spend in Ho Chi Minh City and it was really good idea to contact HCMC free tours. Such a great inititive of the local students. Thanks to Ngan, my tour guide, my stay went very smoothly and even though it was a very short visit, we managed to see many places, including all the major attractions of the city, also we took a cruise on Saigon River (which I would probably book on the net that would cost me much more, but thanks to Ngan who was well informed, we took a very pleasant evening cruise for only 7$); thanks to Ngan’s determination we managed to see the Water Pupper Show, and last but not least, we climbed the Bitexco Tower overlooking the city. It was great to be with someone who lives there, knows the history of the country and its culture. Besides of that, the atmosphere of the tour was great. It was actually more like meeting a friend rather than a tour guide. I encourage all people, single travellers like me or groups, visiting Ho Chi Minh City to take this great opportunity and see the city together with the students from HCMC free tours. Very enjoyable time!~

We took the tour with Ngan and she proved to be a most impressive and informative guide. She was most informative in detailing to us the history of both Ho Chi Minh city, as well as the history and stories behind specific places such as the independence palace. Ngan was also a great guide in the sense that she was really friendly and open and also willingly took us for a walk to different places in the city. We felt that we were in excellent hands with Ngan. We can, without any doubts, recommend Ho Chi Minh free tours for anyone visiting the city and especially for people who only have limited time in the city. Thank you Ngan and we wish uou all the best in your studies and for the future!!! You were great and we thoroughly enjoyed your tour!!

I recently visited Ho Chi Minh City on a business trip and had some free time my first day there. I was exhausted but wanted to make the most of my free time there, so I searched “Ho Chi Minh City free tour” to see if it existed, and I found this lovely group! Tien responded to my inquiry within one hour and we arranged to meet for a walking tour. She took me all over HCMC. On our walking tour, we saw the Opera House, Notre Dame Basilica, Saigon City Post Office, Independence Palace, the War Remnants Museum, and the Ben Thanh Market. We had great conversations along the way. Tien is very knowledgeable, friendly, and hospitable! I would highly recommend Ho Chi Minh Free Tours to all.

My family & I joined a HCMC tour today with Dieu Ly,

I was amazed with the amount of knowledge and professionalism Ly had. We had a great time touring around the city and she was able to accomodate when we wanted to miss the Ben Thanh Market.

She’s extremely friendly and easy to talk to, I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting HCMC. My family is originally from HCMC and they enjoyed it as much as I did.

Thank you Ly for the great tour!

Ngan was my guide for the morning tour. What a great innovative idea. She used to be shy and wanted to practice English, so chucked herself in the deep end and started this amazing tour company. I have admiration and respect for all the guides. However, since I have only met Ngan, I can only comment on her touring ability, I have many thanks and gratitude for her professionalism, information, passion for her city and genuine friendliness.
The guides have to pay their own entrance into paying sites so if you do go on the tour, make sure you cover their costs ($1.5) and buy them a coffee or a drink ($1-2) to say thanks for their time. It’s what will keep the good karma flowing.
Again thank you sincerely, I will be back with my wife and I hope to see other parts of your beautiful, exciting and interesting city.

    One very happy Neil

My boyfriend and I met Ngan for a morning tour in November 2014 and we very much enjoyed it. What a great initiative! As a student myself I find it extremely interesting to chat with other students from the place where I stay, to exchange views about education, university, daily life…And the tour fulfilled all my expectations! Ngan had very interesting and informative things to say about the sights and the even better part was to sit after altogether to have coffee; I caught the opportunity to get plenty of insights about Vietnamese lifestyle, daily life in the city…how instructive. Thank you very much again for this great moment!!

    HCM City Free Tour

I stumbled across this website when I was planning a weekend break in the city and thought I’d give it a try as some other people had had a good experience with them.

I got a confirmation email from Ngan for my request for a private tour and we met outside the Independence Palace as arranged. She showed me around the palace and then took me inside the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Post Office. At the Opera House she helped me enquire about tickets for a couple of shows (which I booked). Although it was supposed to be a walking tour, I’d previously asked her to take me to the Jade Temple and we took a taxi for this and the return which were very reasonably priced.

We also went for coffee which of course I paid for but she declined my offer of lunch.

Ngan speaks good English and I think she has enough knowledge about the history of the buildings to satisfy most casual tourists. Of course I can’t speak for the other guides English or knowledge.

She was also happy to discuss aspects of Vietnamese culture and her own life which gave me some nice insights into local life. She also asked me a few questions about my work and background which of course I was very happy to answer.

It was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone. At the start, I met another couple who turned up at the meeting point as they thought they’d arranged a tour but hadn’t received a confirmation email. I’m not sure how they thought they’d made a reservation but of course they were disappointed that there was no one to meet them. So, please make sure you get your confirmation email before showing up, just as you would for anything else.

It is a free tour and there was never any mention or hint of any payment or a tip at any time. As the end of the tour approached I raised the topic. Apparently some people are prepared to take a tour and not even take the guide for a coffee never mind giving them a tip.

Of course, the tours are run by volunteers and I think it’s heartless not to tip them. If you can afford to travel to Vietnam you can afford to make some financial contribution to the guides. Just do it, ok?

Hoi took her time, guided us around the city and shared her knowledge on Vietnamese history with us! We found the tour very educational and it was a great introduction to our journey of exploring Vietnam. Was one of the highlights of our time in HCMH. She has a great knowledge on Vietnamese history. Thank you for sharing all the information with us and patiently answering all our questions.
    Best wishes,

    Megi and Andres
